MEET YOUR TOUR HOSTS
HOFFMAN RANCH
Thedford, Neb.
Hoffman Ranch is a multi-generational Hereford and Angus operation located in Nebraska’s Sandhills. Operated by Dixie and Denny Hoffman, their son, Jason, his wife, Kaycee, and their children, Haxton, Kennedy and Hayden, the ranch specializes in superior genetics for commercial cattlemen and seedstock producers and hosts annual bull and female sales.
With an emphasis on studying the maternal side of herd bulls, hard-working, fault-free, low maintenance cow families are at the heart of the operation. They firmly believe those traits are essential in any breed to achieve high levels of excellence. The Hoffman program is based around proven genetics that can build quality cattle for the progressive commercial cowman.
In conjunction with the World Hereford Conference, the family is hosting a live female sale.
VAN NEWKIRK HEREFORDS
Oshkosh, Neb.
Van Newkirk Herefords is a family-operated ranch located along the scenic North Platte River. The ranch is operated by Joe and Cyndi Van Newkirk and their children and children’s families: Kolby, Meg, Barrett, Sloan, Blair and Marlo Van Newkirk, and Sara, Matt, John, Kennedy and Graham Cover, along with hired man, Travis Kezar.
The Van Newkirk family runs 600 head of registered cows, sells 250 bulls annually the third Monday in January and sells private-treaty females each December. The historic Van Newkirk ranch was established in 1892 and is located on the famous Ogallala Aquifer — in some places it’s only 15 feet down to water. The Van Newkirks hosted their 52nd annual bull sale in January and are excited to welcome visitors from around the world to their beautiful ranch.
SNOWSHOE CATTLE CO.
Arthur, Neb.
Owned and operated by Bernie, Stacie and Rachael Buzanowski, Snowshoe Cattle Co. produces Hereford and Red Angus cattle on Nebraska’s High Plains. Their mission is to provide all essential traits in a balanced genetic package. For more than 30 years, the family’s emphasis has been on the cow, believing it takes a great cow to raise a great bull. Their cow herd must provide excellence in mothering ability, udder structure, athletic phenotype and carcass quality.
Snowshoe hosts an annual bull sale each year and ensures that the bulls they raise and sell to both purebred and commercial producers can multitask — meaning they are balanced in their phenotype with lots of growth, maternal performance and carcass merit to pass onto their progeny. The family is committed to producing Hereford and Red Angus cattle that provide balanced genetics without compromise.
HAYTHORN LAND AND CATTLE CO.
Arthur, Neb.
Located only 17 miles north of Ogallala, Neb., the winner of the coveted inaugural American Quarter Horse Association Remuda Award, Haythorn Land and Cattle Co. is a working ranch breeding commercial cattle as well as foundation-bred Quarter Horses.
Haythorn Land and Cattle Co. is nestled in the rolling Sandhills of Nebraska. This area contains the largest underground water source on the continent, the Ogallala Aquifer. The sprawling landscape it supports is also the largest grass stabilized sand dune region in the world. Bluestem, Grama and Buffalo grasses hold down the sand and keep the dunes in place. Summertime brings the delicate wildflowers peeking out of the lush grassland, and the Curlews calling to one another in the clear blue skies. To look out over the gently rolling hills on a quiet summer evening as the sun sets in the west is truly peaceful.
Coyote Ridge Ranch (CRR) is a three-generation family Hereford operation located on the High Plains of Colorado, in the shadow of the Rocky Mountains. The ranch’s primary focus is marketing 75 bulls annually to both registered and commercial cattle operations, in addition to selling females and genetic opportunities from the heart of their reputation cowherd. CRR runs a real-world western range program, consisting of a 180-head cowherd. For more than four decades, they’ve taken great pride in supplying genetics that produce profit and reliability for their customers.
Coyote Ridge Ranch was founded by Jane Evans Cornelius and remains a family operation. Her son, Hampton, his wife, Kay, and their son, John Hampton, are critical to the ranch’s success, in addition to Hector Barralaga Ruiz, CRR’s cow manager. Additionally, her daughter Katie Cornelius and her husband Lee Mayo of Mayo Ridge Ranch, Scott City, Kan., also contribute to CRR’s genetics, cowherd and bull marketing success. Their practical philosophy is rooted in the belief that the Hereford female and Hereford-cross female have a strong and time-honored maternal influence in the beef industry.
LaSalle, Colo.
COYOTE RIDGE RANCH
Located in the western Panhandle of Nebraska since 1885, Olsen Ranches is a thriving and diversified agricultural operation with a rich heritage, including registered and commercial cattle herds, research initiatives and crop production on both dryland and irrigated farm ground. Since 1999, Olsen Ranches has been the primary test herd for the American Hereford Association’s National Reference Sire Program, testing nominated Hereford bulls in large contemporary groups in real-life commercial production environments. In 2010, the ranch installed an individual feed intake system. In the last few years, the ranch added an individual water intake system, as well as technology to measure individual methane emissions and nitrogen excretion.
A wholistic family operation, with all family members helping in different aspects of the operation, the Olsens are grateful for each critical contributor to the longevity of their family business. They count it a privilege to have the opportunity to carry the operation forward into the fifth generation.
