YOUNG BREEDERS COMPETITION

RULES & OVERVIEW

​​We are excited to gather 11 teams representing seven countries to the United States to showcase their skills and knowledge of the Hereford Breed.

Industry Practicums & Hereford Bowl

This module is made up of three parts, plus the results of the Hereford Bowl, with the scores of each added up to the total score for the practicum portion. Scores for all of these aspects will be delivered as a team.

Points Possible: 1,250

Herd Health & Animal Handling presented by Merck Animal Health: 300 points

Cattle Scoring Practicum: 300 points

Nutrition Challenge presented by VitaFerm: 300 points

Hereford Bowl: 350 points

Livestock Judging Competition

Participants will be asked to evaluate classes of cattle and different species of livestock based on industry standards of soundness, muscle, structure, performance values and overall quality.

Points Possible: 1,600

Team Fitting Contest

Teams will be asked to work together to fit a Hereford heifer provided by a selected American Royal Hereford exhibitor.​​Additional rules and details for this portion of the competition can be found at the link below. Teams will be scored on the fitting skills of each team member, team work and the final presentation/product.

Meat Animal Evaluation

With the same structure as a live cattle evaluation contest, this contest will be virtual, based off of videos featuring Hereford steers. The following day, the meat evaluation portion of this module will commence at the Kansas State University Meat Lab.

Communications Challenge

Teams will be asked to work together on a presentation about Hereford genetics and the beef industry, that they will present Wednesday, Oct. 22.​ Teams will be scored on subject knowledge, use of pedigrees, team involvement, general effectiveness, presentation display and responses to questions.

Points Possible: 500

Showmanship Contest

All members of the team will compete with their placing added into their teams score. Selected contestants will advance out of their respective heats toward the semi-finals and then onto the final round where champion and reserve champion will be selected.​

Points Possible: 750

GENERAL RULES

These rules are all encompassing, regarding the code of conduct that teams are expected to adhere to, information regarding alternate substitutions and the general expectations of teams representing their country on a global stage.
